Sinners' dinners at St. Timothy's originated in the mid-80's, believed to be 1986. The Reverend John Campbell's wish was to bring church members closer by "breaking bread together" and from this suggestion, Sinners' Dinners was launched. Accommodations within the church facilities at the time were very limited. Drake Hall was not even a dream at the time. The kitchen and fellowship hall, was today's ECW hall, a multipurpose facility accommodating most all church activities including Sunday School classes limited the ability for the dinners to be on the church grounds. Therefore it was proposed to host the dinners in parishioner's homes, backyards or restaurants. Because the dinners had some alliteration and suggested an informal, fun activity designed to bring small groups together around the table and to promote communion outside of the normal Sunday morning church service the name; Sinners' Dinners was selected. The vestry enthusiastically adopted the plan because it offered a great way for the parish to get to know each other better by forming small groups of old and young, singles and couples, new and veteran church goers. The program was a hit from the start and has continued on since origination. From the very start it has been groups of eight to ten individuals with the opportunity to expand if newcomers want to join. The groups meet for about a year and then are reorganized for the next year. Robin Richards, who was the church fellowship Vestry liaison at the time, organized the first Sinners' Dinners groups. Jane and Robin have participated every year since then. Robin quotes: "Jane and I formed friendships with other St. Tims members that last today and I'm sure many others have too."
At one point in the history of the dinner groups the name changed to Grace Dinners but in 2007 the name changed back to the original name of Sinners' Dinners once again.
This year marks the 24th anniversary of the Sinners' Dinner groups. There are a total of 15 groups with 130 participants. This is the biggest year yet! It is the longest lasting small group community in the Parish and one of the activities at St. Timothy's that has created many long lasting friendships, drawing the community closer together. If you are interested in joining, don't hesitate to contact Carol Hoover who will put you in touch with a group for the remainder of the year or be on the look out each spring to sign-up for the coming year.
