The OWLs (Older, Wiser Leaders) objective is to provide opportunities for social interaction and for volunteer work for the senior members of St. Timothy's and for others in our community. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 11:30 a.m., usually in the ECW Hall. The OWLS always encourage and warmly welcome visitors and new members.
Monthly lunch meetings offer a variety of programs. In addition to speakers, which have come from within the congregation as well as from outside organizations, various music or dance groups have provided entertainment. Several day trips are made each year, such as a trip to the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. Annual events include a fall picnic and a Christmas party, at which foods are collected for Crisis Control, and in lieu of exchanging gifts, a monetary offering is sent to Salvation Army.
Although this group was established as primarily a social group from the very beginning, we are an active group and do make worthwhile contributions. We clip and collect Campbell soup labels for the Thompson Children's Home. We participate in creating a decorative table filled with delicious goodies in the teachers' lounge at Cook School. At Christmastime, we donate money and canned goods (in lieu of exchanging gifts at our party) to help families that the Salvation Army supports. Another group of volunteers arrange the bereavement receptions after funerals of church members, when requested by family members. And recently we have been seen helping out with snacks and in other areas of our summer Vacation Bible School for children.
We invite all who would like to be a part of our group at any time, whether just to visit, or to join us on a regular basis. We love getting new members!!
